Unlike other styles of facilitation, at In The Works, we prioritize belonging as an essential part of the process. Ensuring that every body is able to contribute to and benefit from the process. We strive to create the conditions for an equitable power arrangement.

building Belonging

We prioritize belonging in our facilitation and we think of belonging at three different levels:

  1. Individually - this is a felt sense of belonging, of welcome and of having a place/space.

  2. Inter-personally – this is about how we belong to one another in relationship. How are we responsible to and for one another. How do we turn toward on another in times of discomfort, crisis, duress, or joy. this means that we maximize participation

  3. Institutionally – this refers to the policies and protocols that build belonging or undermine it. Consider who gets covered under insurance, who the grievance process/procedures protect, etc.

Because we focus on belonging at all three of these levels when we’re in session we tend to get results that maximize participation and connection. In every session or service we offer, we focus on three things: analysis-building, relationship-building and skill-building. This is what it takes to build belonging.
